Class of 2013's First Post!

We hope you enjoy the first post from the Class of 2013!

We've learned some pretty amazing things since the first day of school. First, in math, we learned about line plots. It's really easy once your learn it. First, you make a number line. Next, you use "x"s to represent the amount of data points for that number directly above it on the number line. Last, you can use this line plot to find data landmarks, like the mode, median, maximum, minimum, mean and range.

Next, we learned how to make and use a broken line graph. It's really easy to make and to get data off of. Then, we learned about all kinds of bar graphs. Regular bar graphs, side-by-side bar graphs, and stacked bar graphs. Graphs are fun to interpretate!

One of Ms. Smith's favorite contraptions is the Airzooka. An Airzooka is a neon yellow tube with elastic and a sheet of plastic that shoots a ball of air. Ms. Smith uses it to wake us up, help us focus, and just plain to have fun.On the second day of school, she used to wake up Colby. His hair swooshed back like a model in a Suave commercial and we all cracked up. Everyone in the class has a new found love, our Airzooka!

This year, we are very excited to have pen pals in France! They live in Northern France, about 2 hours north of Paris. We are going to write to them and eventually Skype with them! We're going to send pictures and holiday cards back and forth, too.We sent our first letters this week and can't wait to hear back!

This year, we authored and illustrated children's books. Our class' them was anti-bullying. Most people wrote about fictional animals who were bullied, but some stories had people. We learned it is hard to be an author but it is also fun. The project isn't finished yet- we still have to read our books to the 3rd graders! One day, we hope you are able to read our children's books.

As a class, we've completed our Kindness Puzzle in record time! For every act of kindness or compliment from a teacher we receive, we get a puzzle piece. There are 24 pieces in the puzzle. The puzzle is a picture of people standing around the world holding hands and being kind to each other. When we complete the puzzle, we get a class prize. We love being kind!

There are many advantages of being in Miss Smith's class. One of them is stilling on yoga balls. Yoga balls keep you focused and help you concentrate. Sitting on them is also fun because you can bounce up and down to get our your extra energy. We have safety rules for our yoga balls that everyone must follow. Those of us that have yoga balls to sit on really enjoy them!

"Rock, Paper, Scissors... shoot!" This is a game everyone knows, but what happens when 20 people are doing it at a time in a tournament? The game we're talking about is called Entourage. This is one of the many great games that we play in Miss Smith's class. Entourage isn't just a tournament- people you defeat join your team and people they beat also join your team. Everyone on your team cheers for you as you take on your next opponent. The last two people battle with their crowds on their side. Someone wins and has everyone cheering for them in the end.

Our first weeks of school have been great. Although, one of the best things we have done is play knee hockey during indoor recess Most weeks we play games of four-on-four, so it is small and fun. It's a great activity because we we get to exercise. Our knees hurt sometimes because of the tile in our classroom but we have so much fun that it doesn't matter.

Every Friday, we have a dance party in the few minutes before dismissal is called. We dance to the song The Cha Cha Slide. When the song starts, we all stand up and start dancing. It's really funny because everybody is doing the exact same thing at the exact same time. When they call Round 1 and Round 2, everyone starts to walk by our room and we're still dancing. When Round 3 is called, we all stop dancing and go home for the weekend. A dance party is a great way to end every Friday!
