We hope you enjoy the first post from the Class of 2013!
We've learned some pretty amazing things since the first day of school. First, in math, we learned about line plots. It's really easy once your learn it. First, you make a number line. Next, you use "x"s to represent the amount of data points for that number directly above it on the number line. Last, you can use this line plot to find data landmarks, like the mode, median, maximum, minimum, mean and range.
Next, we learned how to make and use a broken line graph. It's really easy to make and to get data off of. Then, we learned about all kinds of bar graphs. Regular bar graphs, side-by-side bar graphs, and stacked bar graphs. Graphs are fun to interpretate!
One of Ms. Smith's favorite contraptions is the Airzooka. An Airzooka is a neon yellow tube with elastic and a sheet of plastic that shoots a ball of air. Ms. Smith uses it to wake us up, help us focus, and just plain to have fun.On the second day of school, she used to wake up Colby. His hair swooshed back like a model in a Suave commercial and we all cracked up. Everyone in the class has a new found love, our Airzooka!
This year, we are very excited to have pen pals in France! They live in Northern France, about 2 hours north of Paris. We are going to write to them and eventually Skype with them! We're going to send pictures and holiday cards back and forth, too.We sent our first letters this week and can't wait to hear back!
This year, we authored and illustrated children's books. Our class' them was anti-bullying. Most people wrote about fictional animals who were bullied, but some stories had people. We learned it is hard to be an author but it is also fun. The project isn't finished yet- we still have to read our books to the 3rd graders! One day, we hope you are able to read our children's books.
As a class, we've completed our Kindness Puzzle in record time! For every act of kindness or compliment from a teacher we receive, we get a puzzle piece. There are 24 pieces in the puzzle. The puzzle is a picture of people standing around the world holding hands and being kind to each other. When we complete the puzzle, we get a class prize. We love being kind!
There are many advantages of being in Miss Smith's class. One of them is stilling on yoga balls. Yoga balls keep you focused and help you concentrate. Sitting on them is also fun because you can bounce up and down to get our your extra energy. We have safety rules for our yoga balls that everyone must follow. Those of us that have yoga balls to sit on really enjoy them!
"Rock, Paper, Scissors... shoot!" This is a game everyone knows, but what happens when 20 people are doing it at a time in a tournament? The game we're talking about is called Entourage. This is one of the many great games that we play in Miss Smith's class. Entourage isn't just a tournament- people you defeat join your team and people they beat also join your team. Everyone on your team cheers for you as you take on your next opponent. The last two people battle with their crowds on their side. Someone wins and has everyone cheering for them in the end.
Our first weeks of school have been great. Although, one of the best things we have done is play knee hockey during indoor recess Most weeks we play games of four-on-four, so it is small and fun. It's a great activity because we we get to exercise. Our knees hurt sometimes because of the tile in our classroom but we have so much fun that it doesn't matter.
Every Friday, we have a dance party in the few minutes before dismissal is called. We dance to the song The Cha Cha Slide. When the song starts, we all stand up and start dancing. It's really funny because everybody is doing the exact same thing at the exact same time. When they call Round 1 and Round 2, everyone starts to walk by our room and we're still dancing. When Round 3 is called, we all stop dancing and go home for the weekend. A dance party is a great way to end every Friday!
We are a 6th grade class at The Quashnet School. Follow our blog to read about our learning adventures!

A Fabulous Start to 2012!
We've had a wonderful first few months of 2012! We're excited to share some of our recent activities with you in our latest blog post. Remember, our posts are written by the students of Miss Smith's class themselves!
In E.L.A., we designed our own roller coasters for a narrative writing prompt. As we wrote, it seemed like we were really on a roller coaster. The whole class then typed our stories on computers and printed them. After that, we illustrated the roller coaster from our story. We are looking forward to seeing them displayed in the hallway!
In Social Studies, we had a very yummy project! We had to create a map of Egypt using materials of our choice. Many chose edible materials. Some people made cakes! The project was required to be three dimensional. Other materials included sand, play-dough, and paint. This was a fun and interesting project!
In Science, we were separated into groups and we were given a cup, an egg, and a tape measure. Most of us were confused until she passed out the paper. Once Mrs. Terrill explained what we were doing, we got to work setting our eggs in water. The next morning, we recorded our findings. Most eggs had grown and become squishy. We were amazed with our findings! For the next week we put the eggs in vinegar, water with food coloring, and a liquid of our choice. The eggs kept growing and gaining the color of the liquid. Once Amy and Hayley popped theirs, Mrs. Terrill let the groups dissect the rest. What an egg-cellent egg-speriment!
Quashnet recently celebrated Mr. Palmer, one of Quashnet's recess monitors. Mr. Palmer traveled to Korea to compete as part of the US team in the World Wheelchair Curling Championship. We had a rolling rally for Mr. Palmer where he visited each hallway of the school so that we could show our support. We made signs and cheered for him. We also planned a flash mob for him at recess. When we all lined up to come in for lunch, we danced to The Rocky Theme. Good luck, Mr. Palmer!
Imagine the feeling you get inside when you receive a beautiful carnation addressed right to you on Valentine's Day. This February, we're sending carnations to family and friends. For just $1.50 a piece, students could warm someone's soul. The money earned from buying flowers will be used for the end-of-the-year 6th grade activities. Hopefully, some of you received carnations!
We had a Patriot's social on February 3rd to celebrate the Patriot's trip to the Super Bowl. At the social we were able to dance to some of our favorite songs. There were also football related games like a touchdown celebration dance competition, referee charades, and throwing a football through a hula-hoop. We tried to inspire the Patriots with our celebration, but we couldn't. Too bad for the Pats, but they still had a great season.
Can you believe we have already been in school for 100 days? On Thursday, February 9th, many classes celebrated being in school for 100 days. Now that we have less than 80 days left, we can start a countdown for summer!
